I first met Haile more than a decade ago when he
showed one of his films, Harvest 3000, at my college
in New York City. I have vague memories of the film,
but remember it as an interminable exploration of
the Ethiopian farmer's life. But, it was so exciting
to see anything Ethiopian on the big screen that I
was ready to forgive Haile anything, even Sankofa,
another over-long exploration of the legacy of
slavery that he unleashed on the world a few years
earlier. It became a huge hit with black
consciousness activists everywhere. |
