Get Facts on Futures Trading Straight |
|
Dear
Editors,
I refer to your article of April 21 headlined,
“Ethiopian Exchange Bans Futures”, in which you
state that futures trading is banned in Ethiopia and
that this is rooted in state suspicion of free
markets. This statement, and the title of your
article, are misleading and false. To ban an
activity requires that the said activity had been in
existence and disallowed, or approval for it had
been sought and denied. Neither is the case.

Teddy Fever More Than Just Celebrity Worship |
|
Dear Editor,
This is
a reaction to Lulit A. Mariam’s piece written with a
disguising headline, “Cult of the Celebrity” [Volume 9
Number 419, May 11, 2008]. Nevertheless, her obvious
intention was an attack on Tewodros Kassahun (Teddy Afro), a
proud son of this unfortunate country. I was so disappointed
with the article; it took a great deal of courage to make my
response as decent and polite as would be required. |

Penalty Facing Teddy Too Stiff |
|
Dear Editor,
I have
read a number of articles regarding Tewodros Kassahun’s
(Teddy Afro) involvement in a “hit and run” accident. None
seem to be of an investigative nature.
I know
that in Addis Abeba, people recognize the owner of a vehicle
miles away. As a matter of fact, it won’t be an
understatement to say most traffic police officers know all
the drivers who frequent the section of their patrol by
name. As such, it should not take a Sherlock Holmes to get
to the bottom of this incident.

Apologise to “Azmari” |
|
Dear Editor,
What
drove me to light up my laptop and pen this letter to you is
what I read in the “Life Matters” column last week
headlined, “Cult of the Celebrity” [Volume 9 Number 419, May
11, 2008], which I thought was appalling.

Teddy’s Case about Justice, Not Fanaticism |
|
Dear
Editor,
I enjoy
reading Lulit A. Mariam’s column, “Life Matters”. But what
she wrote last week headlined, “Cult of the Celebrity”
[Volume 9 Number 419, May 11, 2008] was a bit disappointing.
This is because when people talk about celebrities in such
circumstances, such as in Tewodros Kassahun’s case, they do
not necessarily talk about the person, but the issue of
justice that the case represents.
I think
the issue of justice should be among the priorities for any
society. |
