‘No Need to Knock Down “Fire Brigades”’:
Mayor |
|
Dear
Editors,
I read the long article by your special
correspondent, Wudineh Zenebe, which appeared in
your paper of April 27, 2008 (Vol.9 No. 417).
The
article is entitled ““Fire Brigades” Fail to end City Woes”
and as is usually the case, heaps blame on the Caretaker
Administration for the challenging problems Addis Ababa is
facing. The article states that “Despite having held the
reigns to the city for two consecutive years… The departing
officials have failed to win the hearts of the Addis Abebans
through their works”. This is because “… Most of their
targets in various sectors were a disappointment “. The
writer goes on to list a catalogue of “failures” ranging
from unemployment, delays in completion of development
projects, housing shortage, inadequate infrastructure,
illegal land transfers, etc. |

Blame State Monopolies for Cement Price Hikes |
|
Dear
Editors,
In his latest appearance in parliament, the Prime
Minister responded to an allegation by a
parliamentarian from the House on the price increase
of cement by the state enterprises. The concern
raised was that the “increase in production cost is
due to hikes in fuel prices.” This is not the case,
in fact, the weight of fuel as an input in the
production of cement is very low (generally less
than 15pc).

“Coptic” Term Derogatory |
|
Dear
Editors,
This is in response to your recent article headline,
“Half-way to Easter” [Volume 8 Number 413 March 30,
2008].
The columnist, Girma Feyissa, made an assertion that
the Ethiopian Tewahedo Church is “Coptic”. Copts are
Egyptian Christians, who have the same doctrine as
the Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia. But the latter
are not Coptic.
