Stranded Truck Halts Gibe II Expansion Project

A special truck carrying a 213tn electric power transformer has been stranded for three weeks in Gibe wasteland, 198Km southwest of Addis Abeba. The 22 axle trailer was unable to maneuver through the narrow and twisted Addis-Jimma Highway and stopped short of reaching its final destination, the project site of Gilgel Gibe II, owned by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo).

AfDB, IFC Make First-Ever Loan to an Ethiopian Private Company

The African Development Bank (AfDB) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank that reopened its office here a few months ago, have approved loans worth a total of 110 million dollars for Derba-Midroc Cement Plc, on Thursday, April 17, 2008.

 

This is the first loan ever made to a private company in Ethiopia by either of these international finance organizations, disclosed Lucy Mamgaga Marimfye, resident representative of AfDB.

Iceland Helps Ethiopia to Explore Geothermal Power

Following the signing of a bilateral relation agreement between Ethiopia and Iceland on January 2008 to explore geothermal power potential in the rift valley region, a team of experts from Reykjavik are to engage in a bilateral geothermal survey.

The most debatable issue today is not whether Ethiopia’s economic crisis emerged now, or is a result of global economic malaise. It is whether it is due to the political instability in 2006 that were subsequent to the 2005 electoral crisis.

Seyee Abraha, former strongman of the TPLF, analysed Ethiopia’s current economy ploughed by extreme inflationary pressure on Op-Ed piece published by the weekly Amharic, Addis Neger three weeks ago. Seyee argued in his article that in order to deal with Ethiopia’s economic woes, and bring sustainable growth, there should a politically stable environment in the country.
