An explosion rocked the normally peaceful capital
last Friday sending tremors of suspicion and
theories on who set the bomb and why through the
Mercato area. The huge boom that penetrated the
usual calls of Africa’s largest outdoor market left
an air of silence in a normally bustling area. A
crowd of onlookers tries to get close to the
epicentre of the disturbance outside the Commercial
Bank of Ethiopia’s (CBE) Aba Korun branch after the
blast at around 2:00pm on February 29, 2008. Both
the federal and city police are investigating the
incident that caused a branch of East Africa’s
largest bank’s glass to shatter but left no one
injured on the sidewalk.
