Oil prices are back above 90 dollars per barrel, the
BBC reported on Thursday, December 7. It attributed
the increase to US pressure on Iran over the
latter’s pursuit of nuclear program. This is up from
the 60 dollars per bottel a year or two ago. Yet,
gas station prices in Ethiopia remain unchanged for
over a year, with the state subsidizing fuel prices;
speculations of adjustments are, however, strong
lately.
It is interesting though to see one of the National
Oil Company (Ethiopia) stations, located on the road
to Bishoftu (Debrezeit), adjacent to MIDROC
Construction terminal, advising motorists that a
price of a litre of regular benzene priced at 5.50
Br, a price long changed by the government that
regulates fuel prices. As you can see in the photo,
the other items – gasoil and kerosene – are left
empty. could it be that managers of the station
forgot to change the price to the current 7.77 Br?
