GTZ Gets New Country Director

Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), an international co-operation enterprise for sustainable development replaced Ernst Axel Momber, the country director of GTZ Ethiopia, with Ulrich Mohr, an agricultural engineer.

Mr. Momber, an economist by training, will finish his five-year term in office at the end of this year and leave for GTZ’s Namibia office.

During his tenure, GTZ increased its total project volume from 130 to 185 million Br and number of staff in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopian Capacity Building Programme (ECBP) is a major factor contributing to this increase. ECBP is one of the three focal points of GTZ, undertaken in cooperation with the Ethiopian ministries of Capacity Building (MoCB), Education (MoE) as well as Trade and Industry (MoTI).

The two other focuses are the Urban Governance and Decentralisation Programme and Sustainable Utilisation of Natural Resources for Improved Food Security Programme carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Works and Urban Development (MoWUD) and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD), respectively.

“Ethiopia stands at a turning point. With the Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty (PASDEP), the Ethiopian government has set out on an ambitious programme to reduce poverty in the country and to boost the economy,” stated Mr. Momber. “As partner in the Ethio-German development cooperation, GTZ supports the efforts of the Ethiopian government and its people to improve the living conditions in the country.”

The increase in project volume is more striking when it comes to GTZ International Services (IS), which works under commission from the Ethiopian government and international donors. The project volume of GTZ IS in Ethiopia rose from close to 53 million Br in 2003 to approximately 794 million Br this year.

Mr. Ulrich, whose tenure begins early next year, is envisaging an even higher growth in the coming five years.

“We are looking forward to extending the fruitful cooperation with our Ethiopian partners,” affirmed Ulrich, the new country director who also has an MSc in Agricultural Economics and Management.

The new Country Director is the Director of GTZ’s Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Division and he was Country Director of GTZ Dominican Republic, Advisor to Peru’s National Institute for Agricultural Research and Promotion and Advisor to the Honduran National Institute for Professional Training.

GTZ has been working in Ethiopia for more than 30 years. Ethiopia currently is the largest country team of GTZ worldwide with more than 200 foreign experts and 430 national staff.
