Some jobs require changing thousands of coins everyday. These cents circulate around the city touching the hands of numerous people from all walks of life. Exchanged for petty items like gum or a cigarette for some, others see them as a lifeline to buying their daily bread, literally. For many, the gold cents individually hold little value compared to the multi-coloured paper bills watched over more closely. It is only when they are gathered together in the hundreds that their economic importance becomes more apparent. Piles of silver coins donning a lion’s head seen here underneath the Ring Road Bridge by Bole International Airport are destined for the taxi callers (weyalas) heard yelling names of landmarks throughout the city. For every one Birr these coin distributors will make 10 cents, though they often have to go running after the speeding blue and white taxis, dodging competitors, to make their profit.
