The more leaders of the various factions in the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) talk about their internal strife, the less is the substance of their division apparent to both their foes and friends alike, observes TAMRAT G. GIORGIS, FORTUNE STAFF WRITER. Read The Full Story

VERBATIM

"It is not to brag about. I do not think our neighbours could compete with this government [in providing investment incentives] for they do not have the economy muscle this government has. This government owns banks, our neighbours do not have state-owned banks; this government controls land, directly or indirectly, our neighbours do not. This government posses instruments that support development in a relatively better manner.

We have thus tried to employ these instruments - in finance and transport - to develop the flower sector. I find it difficult to say we have a lot remaining in terms of supporting the clusters around Addis Abeba."

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi assured his audience gathered at the Millennium Hall to observe the national Exporters Day on November 3, 2007. His was commenting in reaction to concerns raised by the head of Flower Exporters Association, Tsegaye Abebe, that the countries around the region pose challenges by offering an even more attractive investment incentive package to investors.
