Kassu Tells Addis to Stop Negotiated Land Provision
City Officials Displeased Viewing the Instruction as Intrusion on Autonomy
 
 

A quiet disappointment is brewing in the Addis Abeba City Caretaker Administration, following an instruction two weeks ago  from Kassu Yilala (PhD), minister of Works and Urban Development (MoWUD). He wants the city officials to stop providing plots for developers through negotiations.


In a letter he signed on September 26, 2007, the Minister urged the City Administration to adhere only to the auctioning system and suspend all plot requests whose negotiations are pending, while he also orders city officials not to take new requests based on negotiations.

Houses Agency to Layoff 2,350

A restructuring study underway by the Ministry of Works and Urban Development (MoWUD) and leading officials at the Rented Houses Agency (RHA) is to layoff over 2,350 of the latter’s 2,800 employees. The shake-up, which is in the final stages, will squeeze the 33-year-old Agency into a single office under the Ministry.

United Insurance Touts Positive Annual Report

The mood at the 13th annual general shareholders meeting of United Insurance SC, which kicked-off with the presence of 67pc of the shareholders, was rather engaging as the firm grossed 11.42 million Br profit last fiscal year. Reporting premium sales of 81.3 million Br, United hailed its performance, though premiums collected from motor insurance still holds the lion’s share (57pc) of the total premium raised, despite the desire to bring it down from what it was last year (55pc).

Opening Fertilizer Tenders Showing Skyrocketing Prices

The first two fertilizer procurement tenders of the 2007/08 budget year opened on September 17 and October 4, 2007, where no break from the continuously escalating commodity prices. For the tender the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MoARD) floated for the procurement of 75,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer, the sole bidder, Agricultural Input Supplies Enterprise (AISE), which showed its interest to supply 25,000 metric tonnes, offered price range of 510 and 560 dollars per tonne.
