The Quality Standards Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE)
is set to start a new mobile calibration service
after the German government, in collaboration with
the Engineering Capacity Building Programme (ECBP),
donated two calibration vehicles at a cost of 3.6
million Br.
Speaking to Fortune, Messai Girma, director
general of QSAE, emphasises that, even though the
weighing devices distributed to the regional states
from the main office match the standards, they
require calibration.
“With the mobile calibration vehicles in hand, the
500,000 Br budget we allotted for this year would
allow us to enhance the calibration of the weight
measurements effectively in the regions,” Messai
confirms. “The new calibration efforts would be
useful to bring down the cost of transportation to
bring machineries from the region for inspection as
well as reducing the use of traditional means by
which weight measurements are taken in the regions.”
Once the mobile calibration service goes
operational, it will make possible the joint effort
of QSAE and the Engineering Capacity Building
Programme in checking and reading the electric power
metre, weight, pressure, volume and temperature
effectively, Caterina Binhack, public relations
officer of ECBP, told Fortune.
The two calibration vehicles donated by the German
government are furnished with modern devices and
equipments that include meteorology data logging
devices and power supply units. These types of
vehicles were first used by Britain’s HITEK Ltd in
1989.
The International Standardisation Organisation (ISO)
celebrates its 38th official quality control day in
its 150-year history today.
“The works of ISO, International Electronic
Commission (IEC) and International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) not only open markets
but also bring environmental safety and economic
development under their joint platform,” Messai
informed Fortune that the issue of security,
health, access to information and knowledge enjoy
will enjoy special attention at today’s
celebration.
