Much to the surprise of many observers, the United
States (US) House of Representatives unanimously
voted on Tuesday to approve a piece of legislation
heralded by critics of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s
administration as a means for holding the Ethiopian
government to account for alleged human rights
violations.
Two opposition leaders, Brehanu Nega (PhD) and
Bertukan Mideksa, testified to the US Congress a day
before the October 2 vote, while Jendayi E. Frazer
(Prof), the State Department’s Assistant Secretary
for Africa, defended the US administration’s policy
toward Ethiopia. Frazer’s efforts, however, did
little to change the minds of members of the lower
house.

When a professor came from East Germany in 1977 at
the height of Ethiopia’s military led revolution,
his advice was perplexing, recalls Leulseged Teferi,
president of Dashen Bank. He told the Governor of
the National Bank at the time, Legesse Tikie, that
the government should practice “socialist banking”,
thus encouraging him to merge the two commercial
banks .... |

A visible absence from chiefs of banks operating in
the country at a seminar held at the Sheraton Addis
last Thursday was Leikun Brehanu, general manager of
Awash International Bank. It was represented by one
of his deputies, Eshetu Fanta, for Leikun was
opening the 44th branch of the Bank in Assosa town,
Benshangul-Gumuz Regional State.

VERBATIM |

"I am very glad that we did not take power; if we had the
situation now would be dangerous. We could have been easily
embarrassed in front of the people." |
|

Bedru Adem,
member of the released CUD leadership, was quoted in an
exclusive interview with Ethio Channel, an Amharic weekly. He
described the 2005 election campaign as a manifestation of
thirst for power on the part of the pro-Berhanu Nega group.
