Security Activities in Somali Region Endangering Livelihoods: UN

Due to security activities in the Somali Regional State trade and the movement of agro-pastoral people in Warder, Degahabur and Gode zones has been limited and the inhabitants of rural areas have been cut off from the main chain of food distribution.

Given the fact that majority of the people in those particular parts of the region are pastoralists who essentially make their living from selling livestock and livestock products with which money they trade cereals and other basic commodities, the limit of movement imposed on some of this area has exacerbated the supply chain of food items very severely.

The effort to reach the affected area in the region last month with commercial food has not met the satisfaction level of the inhabitants. Dispatching food either through the military convoy or the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Agency in these zones will not alleviate the worsening food shortage any bit; it could make a token gesture of sympathy, though. The continued restriction of movement would cut off the routine chain of income of the agro pastoralists on the one hand, and worsen further the already food insecure population in those areas of the region, on the other.

Until the restriction has come to an end, the relief food supply should be consistent and increase in volume to match the actual needs of a pastoral and agro pastoral population.
