Prime Minister Widens Consultation to Youth from Regions

Prime Minister Meles Zenawi is to converse with 7,000 youths this morning to give opportunity to 5,000 youths that came from regional states and the remainder from the capital. This conference is facilitated following requests of regional youths to confer with the Prime Minister as the youths in Addis Abeba did on September 8, 2007.

A party will be thrown free of charge for these youths accompanied by another 13,000 coming from different parts of Addis later today at the Millennium Concert Hall, Aster Mammo, minister of Youth and Sports, told Fortune.

Incorporating renowned artists, the musical performances include both contemporary and traditional styles, Seyoum Bereded, general director of the National Millennium Secretariat, which organised the concert, told Fortune.

The youth in Ethiopia are estimated to number 21.1 million representing 30pc of the populace. These youths have commanded the attention of the government as can be understood from Meles’ assertion that nothing can be accomplished without the involvement of youngsters.

Aster said that the previous conference with Meles was effective, as it was used as a tool to implement the youth package launched by the government. Sunday’s conference, especially, would help the government craft its future direction in solving the problem of the youth as representatives from almost every woreda of the regional states would attend, she added.

These regional youths are staying in Amist Kilo and Sidist Kilo university campuses, Kotebe College of Teachers Education and Kolfe Police Colleges. The transport cost in moving to and from Addis Abeba will be covered by their respective regional states while their tuition is the responsibility of the Ministry.
