Addis Chamber Hires Secretary General

The Addis Abeba Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association (AACCSA) hired Teshome Beyene as the new secretary general and Teferi Asfaw and Tamirat Admasu as deputies.

Prior to assuming the new office, Teshome, was president of the Mekele Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association. After his tenure of presidency ended two years ago, he was replaced by Assefa Gebreselassie. Teshome resumed working for Nyala Insurance in Addis Abeba who he had been serving in the capacity of branch manager for 11 years.

Tamirat was formally installed last week as the deputy secretary general responsible for support service. He is still acting manager of the exhibition centre and head of the public relations and media department, formally assuming the capacity of deputy secretary general in charge of business development at AACCSA.

Teshome, 43, earned his fist degree in economics from Addis Abeba University (AAU) in 1986 and received his MA in economics in 1992 at the University of East Angela, in the United Kingdom (UK).

He was the planning expert at the Ministry of Planning on the national account team between 1986 and 1999. Teshome was elected to serve as president of the Mekelle Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Association from 2002 to 2004.

Before his appointment, Semunesh Dimetros, former manager of the investment commission at the Addis Abeba City Administration, remained at the helm of AACCSA as the secretary general for two years. Due to a disagreement she experienced with her colleagues, Semunesh resigned from her position in April this year.

Speaking to Fortune, Eyesuswork Zafu, president of AACCSA, said that the study under which the Chamber is restructured requires the positions of two deputy secretary generals. According to Eyesuswork, 16 candidates submitted their applications for the position of the secretary general, out which four were short listed. Teshome was picked mainly based on his educational background, he added.

AACCSA was established in 1947 by a group of businessmen, most of whom were ex-pats. It became a legal entity the same year it was established.
