Dev’t Bank Rejects Etio-Djibouti Power Additional Loan |

The African Development Bank (ADB), the major
financier of the Ethiopia-Djibouti Power
Interconnection Project, rejected an additional 40.8
million dollar loan request from the governments of
Ethiopia and Djibouti. However, the Bank has
approved three international companies - French ETDE,
Indian Kalapa-Taru and Italian Siemens –
short-listed by the joint committee of the countries
for the project construction.

Finally, the Privatisation and Public Enterprises
Supervisory Agency (PPESA) has decided to give the

Giving
priority to a sector that the government sees as having
great export and growth potential due to Ethiopia's

endowments, the textile sector will see a large injection of

Industry (MoTI) hopes this will improve the industry's
dismal performance compared to targets of last year.

Coffee Joins DBE’s Priority Loan List |
|
The Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE) is to include
coffee on the priority list of its loan policy.
It was considered after a three-day working visit
made by Wondwosen Kebede, the Bank’s president, and
his deputy, Mesenbet Shenkute, to tap coffee growing
localities of the country, such as the Jimma Zone in
the Oromia Regional State (birthplace of the drink).

KRINAS, an Italian company, was disqualified on the
technical evaluation of an over 14 million Br tender
floated by Anbessa Shoe Factory. The financial
offers of the eight other short-listed international
companies that passed the technical evaluation were
opened last week.

Employers Federation Re-elects Board |
|
The Ethiopian Employers Federation (EEF) elected its
Board of Directors again after the Ministry of
Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA) rejected the
previous election result and ordered the Federation
to hold re-elections. In an election held on
Saturday, August 4, 2007, at Ghion Hotel, Buzayehu
Tadelle of East African Holdings; Kassahun Bogale
from the Adama (Nazareth) branch of the
Federation’s office; and Tadese Eyasu from the
Ethiopian Hotels and Restaurants Association, have
been elected as the new Board members of the
Federation.

Bln Dollar African Investment Aims |

The multi-million dollar private equity firm, Actis,
appointed Teshome Kebede, deputy director of
agribusiness and trade expansion programme in
Ethiopia for USAID, as a member of its East African
Advisory Panel from Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and
Tanzania.

Exports Fall Short of Target |

Struggling to garner the much needed foreign currency to
supply the growing import demand for commodities such as
fossil fuels, Ethiopia was overly ambitious in projections

Largest Ever Gold Smuggling Verdict
Overturned |
|
The largest ever monetary fine that was passed by
the Federal First Instance Court against Daniel
Mekonnen, co-owner of Africa Jewellery, for an
alleged attempt to smuggle over 46kg of gold out of
the country has been overturned by the Federal High
Court.
