The federal government is exploring the possibilities to introduce a
commodities exchange in Ethiopia that experts hope will
“revolutionaries the Ethiopian agriculture as we know it today.” It
is part of a global phenomenon that has emerged to fill the gap left
with the introduction of market liberalization across the developing
world, according to experts.
A taskforce of nine, chaired by Eleni Gebremedhin (PhD),
from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI),
has been established and commissioned by the government to
spearhead the project. Other members include representatives
from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the
Quality and Standards Authority of Ethiopia, the Grain Trade
Enterprise, and the Ethiopian Development Research
Institute. The taskforce reports to Deputy Prime Minister
Addisu Legesse, sources disclosed.
An Indian company,
KEC, has been awarded a contract worth half a billion Birr last
week, to complete the job of electrifying 47 towns across the
country.
This lucrative
contract is in fact the sixth for KEC, awarded in just a year by the
management of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo). The
new contract will bring the total value of business the Indian
company manages in Ethiopia to 1.36 billion Br.
In the
aftermath of a rocky relationship between his government and several
European diplomats based in Addis, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi has
invited ambassadors from European countries for a public debate
dubbed “Dialogue and Partnership with Europe.”
This debate is
scheduled to take place during the occasion of European Day,
celebrated every year on May 9.
Solomon Mekonnen, 41, a civil servant with the Addis Abeba
Municipality, and a father of one was still in dilemma on Tuesday
night, April 18. He was about to decide to buy a chicken after a
long and persuasive talk with his wife that wanted to see a rooster
slaughtered for the Easter holiday, to be observed tomorrow (Sunday
April 23, 2006).
The closer the negotiations between
African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries and the more European
Union, the intense the debate has come to the forefront. The general
consensus has it that the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), to
be signed between the two parties in early 2008, has an expensive
adjustment cost Europe has agreed to compensate.
Hardly a month passes without a high-level Chinese
delegation visiting this country. Last week alone, there were two
high-ranking Chinese state officials on a visit to Addis. They were
the chairperson of a parliamentary committee and the vice-mayor of
Beijing. Every other week at least one Chinese business delegation
is on a visit to the Ethiopian capital. Chinese companies are

For too long, this newspaper has been advocating the
benefits of a free market economic system, rather convinced that
market forces, left unrestrained, could serve with better quality
and competitive price which is to the best advantage of the consumer
community.
Such a system, which has been proven to be better ....

The metropolis has been without a mayor for nearly a
year. I do not want to go into the details of the "Tale
of One City" right now. Easter Holiday celebrations may
be an outlet to lease off some steam for people looking
up to Jesus Christ the redeemer. Ethiopians do not look
up to England, Italy or France as a safe haven like
former colonies when they are in trouble.
It seems that the width and breadth of the diplomatic core
is spreading these days and setting its sights on things that would
otherwise be considered out of its territory. The Bulgarain Charge
d'Affairs, Emile Trifonov, is reportedly under negotiations with
five different companies and diplomatic missions to sell its
chancery and residence ....
