Other members include representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Quality and Standards Authority of Ethiopia, the Grain Trade Enterprise, and the Ethiopian Development Research Institute. The taskforce reports to Deputy Prime Minister Addisu Legesse, sources disclosed.

The metropolis has been without a mayor for nearly a year. I do not want to go into the details of the "Tale of One City" right now. Easter Holiday celebrations may be an outlet to lease off some steam for people looking up to Jesus Christ the redeemer. Ethiopians do not look up to England, Italy or France as a safe haven like former colonies when they are in trouble.

I do not share the idea that the Ethiopian currency has lost its purchasing power. Because I look at not only the purchasing ability of legal tender but also the exchange that is going on in black market, using the Birr. The power that the currency has and the strength of its exchange rate against other hard currencies does not allow me to think that the power of the Birr is dead.

Girma Birru, Minister of Trade and Industry, on the issue concerning devaluation of Birr.

Addis Zemen, Tuesday April 18, 2006

Our regulations and directions on foreign exchange allow loans to those who would properly import goods and services into the country, not to those who would target to hoard colossal profits by improper means.

Teklewold Atnafu, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia, on the reliability of the institution to provide adequate foreign exchange for debtors. (Source: The Ethiopian Herald)

I think we all believe Ethiopia is at a crossroads. Because it is at a  crossroads, we believe it is time for engagement. Engagement and commitment for sustained development, and for multiparty democracy.

Last night, I was in a talk where Issac Diwan, the Director of the World Bank, was speaking. He was asked if it was true that weather or not this country was progressing economically, and he said “it is true.”

And I think this is so important. This is why the country is at a crossroads.

Ambassador Vickie Huddleston, who for the past eight months has been serving as the Charge d’Affairs of the US Embassy in Ethiopia, speaking to local journalists on April 5, on the current political situation.
