		<item><title>Keeping an eye on the economy</title><description>Inflation and a shortage of hard currency have been the twin problems that beset the economy in the past four years, Sufian Ahmed, minister of Finance and Economic Development, said to MPs on June 3, 2010. Monetary policies implemented by the central bank had managed to keep inflation in check and keep the foreign currency reserve steady at two months, Teklewolde Atnafu, governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), told Parliament on June 21. That has come, however, at a cost to commercial banks, whose lending has been capped due to changes made to their reserve requirement ratios and liquidity ratios. However, this decision seems to be working.
