VICTORY SALUTE!

After a provisional announcement of the results of the fourth general election by the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) the Human Rights Watch (HRW) brande the election as fraudulent and rigged. Supporters of the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) went out en mass to Meskel Square on May 25, 2010. Leaders of the EPRDF, including the Prime Minister, addressed the rally. The provisional results from the NEBE showed that the EPRDF and its affiliates took 499 and 45 seats, respectively. One of the seats from the Addis Abeba constituency in Wereda 6 (Addis Ketema District) was taken by Girma Seifu, a member of the Forum for Justice and Democratic Dialogue (FJDD), a.k.a. Medrek. Another seat from the 123 constituencies of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples (SNNP) Regional State went for Ashebir Gebregiorgis (MD), an independent candidate. The provisional result of one constituency from the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State has not been obtained yet. With over 99pc of the seats taken by the EPRDF and its affiliates, the prospects of Parliament for the next five years have become a subject of much debate among political analysts, party members, and the public as EDEN SAHLE, FORTUNE STAFF WRITER reports.

People went out of their way to ensure peace and tranquillity, not just those who voted for us but also those who voted against us. So we are reaching out to those who voted for the opposition, more than reaching out to the opposition itself.” PLEASE SEE FULL INTERVIEW
