FAIT ACCOMPLI?

Leaders of the incumbent EPRDF expect a landslide victory from national polls today, despite similar claims from their opponents. The Revolutionary Democrats believe today will be a day of vindication for their party which suffered a humiliating landslide defeat in Addis Abeba in the 2005 national elections, when they had lost all the 23 seats the city has in the federal parliament. Their overwhelming expectation of staging a stunning comeback is evident from the billboard size clocks watches they installed in major avenues of the city, reading 10:10, signalling full gains, although there was no official explanation. It is “fait accompli”, said a veteran member of the EPRDF, now serving in a diplomatic mission, but came home to vote. These boards put up at Meskel, Megenagna and Teklehaimanot squares are a new phenomenon to the scene of the electoral campaign in Ethiopia, and demonstrate the aggressive campaigns the ruling party has waged against its opponents in the capital. Whether or not the incumbent will have a complete victory in the capital as its leaders hope is yet to be seen; nonetheless, pundits see loss of seats in constituencies such as Bole, “French Legation”, and some weredas of Merkato, where the EPRDF suffers historical losses, is inevitable.

Daunting Task: will it be easy?

Before Election Day, EDEN SAHLE, FORTUNE STAFF WRITER, sat down with Thijs Berman, chief of the EU Election Observation Mission to Ethiopia, and interviewed him about the how the election campaigns, the electoral board, and his team’s mission were going as well as what he expected for today, Sunday, May 23, Election Day.

All but voters in Addis Abeba are to vote for their preferred candidates both in the regional councils and the Federal Parliament.
