Busy Market |

Zewdie
Getaneh is making the rounds of Doro Tera, in
Mercato, buying her holiday roosters. Like many
Ethiopians, Zewdie does all her shopping to liven up
her house and family with the holiday spirit. The
day was rainy and she kept her open umbrella firmly
in hand as she measured up the fowls in her hands
and negotiated the prices. Determined that she would
do all within her means to have an enjoyable New
Year Day, she leaves Mercato with two roosters which
she managed to buy for 140 Br. The task of buying
the sheep would fall to her husband’s lot. The two
animals are important elements of a complete
Ethiopian holiday celebration.
